We need to have the same expectations for our modified coaches and players that we do for our JV/Varsity teams. As officials we need to officiate with the same quality officiating we would give at the JV/Varsity level. It can be a long night at the modified level, but for those players, coaches and parents this is the start of their sports experience, let’s continue to make it a great one for them.
- Coaching area: from the endline to the attackline. Coaches should not be in the sub box or requesting subs, TO or lineup checks when not in this area. A gentle reminder to them as to what proper procedures are, are greatly appreciated
- Slow the substitution process down. If we allow modified players to just rush onto the court we are going to have to reteach this at the JV level. Also one sub at a time in the sub box
- The ball must hit the floor, wall obstruction, etc., before you blow your whistle. (The ball has to be down before you end a rally.
- As the R2, make sure you’re mimicking your R1 signals, not making them before they do or ending the sequence before they do.
- Same rule applies for players not playing. They can either sit in the chairs or stand at the end of the bench/attack line. They cannot sit on the floor near the score table or stand behind the bench/chairs.
